Packaging

Packaging for the DRAG S & X “Pod Mods” is typical of Voopoo’s design layout. Moreover the front features a laminated print of the enclosed device, alongside which are icons detailing some key features of the enclosed device. While on the sides are social media icons, and a QR code for technical support, which is always good to see. Additionally on the back are the box contents, contact details, authenticity checker, and health and governmental compliance logos.

Removing the outer sleeving reveals the DRAG S & X devices sat neatly within their inlays. Additionally the empty pods are pre-fitted. Furthermore adjacent to the “Pod Mods” are the rather short USB-C cable, and enclosed coils, with the user manual sat on top.

Build quality

Without a doubt the DRAG S & X “Pod Mods” from Voopoo are great to look at, with sleek lines and gun metal finish. Serving to combine the best of the Voopoo Vinci Air and the Voopoo Drag 2 Platinum into the latest “Pod Mods”. Furthermore thanks to the refined ergonomics and padded grips, the DRAG S & X “Pod Mods” feel perfectly balanced and extremely comfortable in the hand.

Moreover the stitched leather patch featuring the DRAG logo, looks very stylish and also provides extra grip on those variants with soft material. A far classier finish then the original Drag mods from Voopoo. Furthermore the Zinc-Alloy body with its matt finish serves to hide fingerprints well, while giving an extremely sturdy feel in the hand.

Fascia

Needless to say the front fascia closely mimics the original layout of the DRAG mods from Voopoo. Furthermore the chamfered leading lines from the main body to the front fascia are a nice touch. Keeping a part of the original styling of the DRAG vape mods, in this revamped and modern retake.

Much like the Voopoo DRAG 2 Platinum, the buttons are not overly audible. But they are suitably responsive, with both the DRAG S & X “Mod Pods” from Voopoo having a reported firing response of 0.001s. Furthermore the fire button is in a perfect position for thumb firing, and the control buttons have a good spacing between them.

Without a doubt the 0.96′ TFT display on both of the devices is nice and crisp, with the layout easily readable. Although those with eyesight difficulties may struggle with the coil and voltage readouts. While the new achievement score system is a bit of fun, and even without intending todo so, you find yourself checking your latest score. However for the DRAG X I would prefer the amount of timed vaped replaced with the amp load on the battery. Reminding people of battery safety and wether the battery in use is up to the task.

Additionally I am not a fan of restricted wattage modes such as the Voopoo Smart Mode. Especially as with some coils you may wish to up the wattage a little more. However this can be circumvented by using the RBA mode instead.

Airflow Control

While the airflow design is similar to that on any tank. Nonetheless the addition of a fully adjustable airflow on a pod style system is great. Whilst completely functional, the styling of the airflow and its control ring makes for an eye pleasing feature. Importantly when adjusting, the airflow remains smooth, although a little noisy. Furthermore as I personally prefer a cooler vape, I have been enjoying the DRAG S & X “Pod Mods” with the airflow fully open.

Pods

Part of the unique look of the DRAG S & X “Pod Mods” from Voopoo is the domed pods. Looking more like a stock coil tank than a pod system. Moreover the well moulded PCTG pods are held firmly in place by three magnets, attaching to the cover of the airflow control inlets. Importantly, while the pods are not completely clear, the visibility remains perfect at all times including low light levels.

Refilling

Despite having a good sized refilling hole and a secure fitting silicone gasket. Refilling at times can be awkward, as the gasket and the coil get in the way.

Key Differences

Firstly and the most obvious difference between the Voopoo DRAG S & X “Pod Mods” is power. While the Drag X is powered by a replaceable 18650 battery, the DRAG S instead features a 2500mAh internal battery. Consequentially the DRAG X is capable of producing 80W of power, but the DRAG S is unsurprisingly limited to 60W.

Secondly, because of the replaceable 18650 battery, the housing needs a bit more space. As such the height of the DRAG X is 8mm taller than the DRAG S, by no means is it a large amount, yet it is noticeable. Thirdly the DRAG S features the automatic firing method when inhaled. Sadly the DRAG X doesn’t retain this feature. Nonetheless it is very hit and miss anyway, so not much is missed.

Dimensions

Dimensionally both the DRAG S & X “Pod Mods” from Voopoo are very similar with only slight differences as listed below.

DRAG S Dimensions

Dimensionally from the base to the top of the drip tip, the Voopoo DRAG S stands 87mm tall, has a width of 28mm and is 33mm deep from the front to the back.

DRAG X Dimensions

Dimensionally from the base to the top of the drip tip, the Voopoo DRAG S stands 95mm tall, has a width of 28mm and is 32.5mm deep from the front to the back.

Functionality

While the DRAG S & X “Pod Mods” from Voopoo offer a new score feature, it however offers less than others on the market. Nonetheless the devices offer a simple straight forward method of vaping.

Furthermore the DRAG S features an Automatic and P mode for firing the device. Consequentially this allows the user to either vape whilst pressing down the fire button or simply inhaling without needing to touch the button. However, the automatic firing method requires quite a forceful inhale in order to fire. Consequentially this reduces the response time. Additionally the airflow can become a little turbulent when using this method on the Voopoo Drag S, which is a shame.

Turning on either device is via 5 clicks of the fire button. While 3 clicks will enter and exit the RBA mode. Furthermore holding down the fire button and the up control button simultaneously will lock the device, to unlock repeat the process.

Modes

While the DRAG S & X “Pod Mods” from Voopoo do not offer much in the way of end user functionality. Nonetheless it does have a few menus, such as reading the puff counter and setting the time.

VW – Smart Mode

Set as default on the DRAG S & X “Pod Mods” from Voopoo, the smart mode is in essence a Variable Wattage mode. Allowing the user to adjust the wattage for refining the vape experience. However the maximum wattage is fixed by the recommended maximum wattage of the coil in use.

VW – RBA Wattage

Much like the Smart Wattage mode, the user is able to adjust the wattage to suit personal preference. But unlike the Smart Mode the maximum wattage is not limited by coil, and is also handy for when you want a little extra power with a stock coil.

PUFF – Puff Counter

Displayed in the form of bar graphs, the 14 day puff counter is assessable by holding the up and down control buttons together. Furthermore each days puff total is shown above each bar when scrolled through using the up and down buttons.

Additionally to reset the puff counter, press and hold both the fire and down button together.

Clock Menu

If you need to adjust the time of the clock on the DRAG S & X “Pod Mods”, then hold the fire, up and down buttons together to enter the menu.

Battery Use

As always battery life is dependent on capacity of the battery and the vaped wattage. But it is also dependent on the efficiency of the onboard chip and its programming. Without a doubt the DRAG S & X “Pod Mods” from Voopoo battery efficiency is good. Additionally the battery levels are indicated on the LCD screen in the form of an icon. Similar to that of a mobile phone. However as expected, battery life is short when using the DRAG X at 60W or higher. Moreover this is the same with all single 18650 battery devices.

Charging either device is via the USB-C connecter with a specified charging rate of 5V 2A. Despite this, I could not get the Voopoo Drag S to charge more than 5V 1.44A.

Coil Replacement

Without a doubt replacing the DRAG S & X “Pod Mods” from Voopoo is nice and easy. But you can only change a coil with half a pod or less e-liquid. Nonetheless, simply pull out the old coil. Prime the new coil by placing a little e-liquid down into the coil, and a drop onto each wicking hole. Now pop the new coil into the pod and refill if need be. Additionally leave the coil to sit for a while to ensure it becomes suitably saturated. Typically I like to leave it 10 – 15 minutes, then vape.

Voopoo PnP-VM1 0.3Ω Coil 32 – 40W

The PnP-VM1 0.3Ω coil hasn’t changed and as such happily wicks 70VG e-liquid. Sadly it doesn’t like to be chained vaped. However the good news is you sense it in the vape, before you get close to a dry hit. Furthermore flavour wise the PnP-VM1 has a good range of flavour profiles with fruits and meringues coming out well.

Voopoo PnP-VM5 0.2Ω Coil 40 – 60W

Clearly the wicking for the PnP-VM5 is not an issue, even when priming, this coil sucks up juice extremely well. Moreover the PnP-VM5 is more than happy when being chained vaped. Additionally the VM5 produces a good range of flavour profiles. and overall flavour is superior to that of the PnP-VM1. Yet the VM5 still struggles with some tonality within custards.

Voopoo PnP-VM6 0.15Ω Coil  60 – 80W

Similar to the PnP-VM5 the PnP-VM6 wicks well. However the coils wattage recommendation is overrated, with most flavours lost at 70W. Nonetheless the VM6 produces better flavour than the VM5 especially creams. Moreover a creamy mint is perfect at 45W on the PnP-VM6.

Chipset and Protection

Both the DRAG S & DRAG X are powered by Voopoo’s new GENE.TT chipset. Serving not only to create a reported 0.001s response times. But also the new score ranking feature. Additionally the GENE.TT chipset provides 7 or 8 levels of protection depending on model.

  • Overtime Protection – Intelligent overtime protection will avoid atomizer’s coil and cotton being burned.
  • Short-circuit Protection- When the short-circuit is detected, the mod will protect the battery by preventing the circuit from returning.
  • Overcharge Protection – With dedicated lithium battery protection components, the battery will be protected against battery overcharge and damage.
  • Max Power Protection – Intelligently match power, and it is not allowed to adjust the power above the highest limit, to prevent coils from being burned out.
  • Output Over-current Protection – Intelligently detect output current, and close the output current when the current exceeds the highest limit.
  • Over Discharge Protection – With dedicated lithium battery protection components, the battery will be protected against battery discharge and harm.
  • Over-temperature Protection – TC mode assures the mod and battery work properly within safe temperature range.

However only the DRAG X with its removable 18650 battery features the battery reverse protection.

  • Battery Reverse Protection – With battery reverse protection, the mod will be protected from breakdown.

Niggles

It is fair to say that both the DRAG S & X “Pod Mods” have a few niggles. Moreover with the DRAG S, the Automatic firing method requires a very heavy inhale to fire. Consequentially this delays firing and can at times cause turbulent airflow.

Both the DRAG S & X “Pod Mods” still have a problem with slow leaking coils, but the newer PnP-VM5 and PnP-VM6 are a little better than the PnP-VM1. While this is reducible when refilling by cleaning with a tissue. Nonetheless this remains an ongoing issue with Voopoo’s coils.

Without a doubt using a smart mode that restricts the wattage, is a little off putting. However this can be circumvented by using the device in the RBA mode instead.

Frustratingly each time the pod is removed, the wattage is reset to the maximum recommended for the coil in use.

Similarly the need to keep re-entering the time when changing battery on the DRAG X quickly becomes frustrating. Moreover if the device can keep a score and monitor puff counters without those being reset each time. Then why not the clock function.

Summary

Without a doubt the DRAG S & X “Pod Mods” from Voopoo standout from the crowd. Moreover with sturdy and stylish designs, the DRAG S & X are going to be very popular. While there are a few little differences between the two, it is perhaps easiest to break down to its simplest form. If you want to carry spare batteries and swap them over when needed, then go for the DRAG X. Additionally a bonus to the DRAG X is that it comes with the PnP-VM6 coil, which produces better flavour.

Despite the DRAG S & X “Pod Mods” from Voopoo having a few niggles. However most of the niggles should be fixable via a firmware update. Yet the issue with slowly leaking coils still exists.
