Introduction

Without a doubt the SCAR-P3 and the SCAR-P5 are smart looking pod kits. While the SCAR-P3 features an internal 2000mAh battery and a e-liquid capacity of 5.5ml. The SCAR-P5 features a single 18650 battery and a slightly less e-liquid capacity of 5ml. Furthermore the devices are IP67 water and dust proof, and according to Smok also shockproof. However, are the SCAR-P3 and SCAR-P5 just another pod kit? Or doe they stand apart from the crowd? Let’s take a closer look with this review of the Smok SCAR-P3 and the SCAR-P5.

Typical of Smok’s packaging the front features a laminated photograph of the enclosed colour option for either the Smok SCAR-P3 or the SCAR-P5. Additionally key features are showcased in the form of icons and text. While the back features the box contents, authenticity checker, health warnings and governmental compliance logos.

Furthermore on removing the outer sleeving and box lid reveals the user manual, the Smok SCAR-P3 or SCAR-P5 device with the RPM 2 pod pre-fitted. While the RPM pod and USB cable is sat alongside.

Build quality

Without a doubt both the Smok SCAR-P3 and SCAR-P5 are nice looking pod kits. Moreover with its matt black rubber coating and gunmetal coloured finishing, they look very sleek. Furthermore the marbled effect palm rest provides not only plenty of grip. But thanks to it being slightly padded, it is extremely comfortable to hold. While the SCAR-P3 weighs 105g, the SCAR-P5 weighs 101.5g without a battery inserted. Importantly both feel very robust and sturdy in the hand.

photograph of the Smok SCAR-P3 and SCAR-P5 front fascias showing the differences between the two. SCAR-P5 has plastic surround SCAR-P3 doesn't

While the front fascia comprises of a larger rubber coated panel on the SCAR-P3, the layout is very tidy and the audible buttons are both responsive and well placed for ease of use. But on the SCAR-P5 there is a plastic surround on the fascia, personally I prefer the front of the SCAR-P3. Nonetheless the layout of the LCD on the SCAR-P3 and SCAR-P5 are nice and clean. But those with difficult eyesight may struggle with the smaller readouts. Furthermore there is none of the usual coloured theme options to distract from the layout, which is great to see. Furthermore typical of Smok LCD’s, the display is not the sharpest, nor the brightest.

Additionally the Smok SCAR-P3 features a USB-C port which will please many. But the SCAR-P5 has a Micro Type B connection. Additionally the maximum charging rate of the Smok SCAR-P3 is 5V 1.1A, and the SCAR-P5 has a charging rate of 5V 1.3A. Consequentially fast charging is out for both variants.

SCAR-P5 Battery Release

In particular, I really like the locking mechanism for the battery compartment on the Smok SCAR-P5. Moreover it is stylish, yet completely practical and resolute in keeping closed.

Smok RPM 2 & RPM Pods

photograph showing the Smok RPM and RPM 2 pod for the SCAR_P5

As expected the pods for both the Smok SCAR-P3 and SCAR-P5 are well formed and cleanly moulded from a slightly darkened PCTG. Despite this, viewing of e-liquid levels remain good. While the pod features an integrated drip tip, the drip tip is comfortable to use and perfectly balanced to the inclosed RPM 2 0.16Ω mesh coil.

However, despite the refilling hole on the top of the pod being a good size, the refilling hole gasket does not swivel out of the way. Nonetheless the pods hold themselves well to the SCAR-P3 and SCAR-P5 devices.

Dimensions

Smok SCAR-P3

Dimensionally from the base to the top of the drip tip, the Smok SCAR-P3 stands 111mm tall with the RPM 2 pod attached. Furthermore the SCAR-P3 has a width of 27mm and a depth of 32.3mm from the front to the back.

Smok SCAR-P5

While there is not too much difference in size, the SCAR-P5 measures from the base to the top of the drip tip, the Smok SCAR-P5 stands 118.8mm tall with the RPM 2 pod attached. Furthermore the SCAR-P3 has a width of 28mm and a depth of 35.8mm from the front to the back.

Functionality

photograph showing the Wattage Mode on the Smok SCAR-P3 and SCAR-P5

While offering a no fuss style of vaping, the Smok SCAR-P3 and SCAR-P5 features an adjustable wattage mode, and puff counter.

Moreover turning on the devices is via the customary 5 clicks on the fire button. Furthermore 3 clicks on the fire button prevents the device from being fired. While Holding the down and fire button simultaneously locks the wattage output. Additionally holding the down and fire button together resets the puff counter. However for those wishing to change the colour of the display, press both the fire and up button.

VW – Variable Wattage

Without a doubt having an unrestricted adjustable wattage mode allows for fine tuning of the vape experience. Moreover with the Smok SCAR-P3 and SCAR-P5, the control buttons allow for adjustments in 1W increments. Perfect for balancing the power output to suit both coil and personal preference.

Battery Use

photograph showing the Smok SCAR-P3 and SCAR-P5 charging LCD display status

Importantly on the screen, the battery level is shown in both an icon and a percentage read-out to its side. Similar to that of a mobile phone. Furthermore when charging the remaining charge time is also shown which is always great to see.

SCAR-P3

Featuring an internal 2000mAh battery, battery economy is as expected with the enclosed coils. Naturally battery life is shorter when using the RPM 2 0.16Ω coil at around 40-50W. Nonetheless with the RPM 0.4Ω coil, you can expect around 150 puffs between charges. While testing the Smok SCAR-P3 produced a charging rate via the USB-C charging port of 4.94V 1.26A.

SCAR-P5

Whereas the SCAR-P3 features an internal battery, the SCAR-P5 utilises a replaceable single 18650 battery, perfect for a quick change when battery levels are low. Despite the difference in the method of battery use, battery longevity and performance of the Smok SCAR-P5 is very close to that of the SCAR-P3. While charging via the USB Mini connection, the Smok SCAR-P5 produced a charging rate of

However I will always highly recommend not to use a mod for charging, regardless of the manufacturer. Importantly a dedicated battery charger from a trusted manufacturer will always be the safer option.

Refilling

Due to the top mounted refilling hole, refilling on the Smok SCAR-P3 and SCAR-P5 is a quick and easy task on either the RPM 2 or RPM pods. However as the gasket doesn’t swivel out of the way, refilling from larger diameter bottles is awkward.

Airflow

photograph of the airflow on the Smok SCAR-P3 and SCAR-P5

Despite the lack of an adjustable airflow on the Smok SCAR-P3 and SCAR-P5, the airflow provides a loose DTL vape. Moreover the airflow is drawn from both sides of the device and produces a very smooth vape. However a little more flavour can be drawn out of either device, by partially placing a finger over one of the airflow inlets.

Coil Replacement

photograph showing the RPM pod on the SCAR-P3 and P-5 for replacing the coil

While replacing the coils on either the RPM 2 or RPM pod is a nice and easy affair on the Smok SCAR-P3 and SCAR-P5. However the coils can still not be replaced with any remaining e-liquid. Nonetheless replacing and priming the coil is a case of pulling out the old coil. Additionally prime the new coil with a few drops of e-liquid down the coils chimney and on each of the wicking holes. Next place the coil into the pod, and refill. Importantly leave the coil to sit for 10-15 minutes in order to become saturated.

As a rule and part of the testing process, I leave the used pod filled with e-liquid to sit for a minimum of 24 hours. As a result neither the pods or coils leaked, which is good to see.

RPM 2 0.16Ω Mesh Coil – 25-50W

photograph of the SMOK RPM 2 0.16Ω mesh coil

Undoubtedly fruit flavoured e-liquids are the best type for the RPM 2 0.16Ω mesh coil. Moreover between 35-40W a mango flavoured e-liquid is particularly good. But doesn’t perform so well with custard based e-liquids, and fails to bring out some of the sweetness in a lemon curd vape.

RPM 0.4Ω Mesh Coil – 25W

photograph of the SMOK RPM 0.4Ω mesh coil

Without a doubt the Smok RPM 0.4Ω Mesh coil is underrated when used with 70VG e-liquids. Moreover at the recommended wattage of 25W, the flavour production is a little washed out. However bump the power up to 30 – 35W and the overall flavour comes out a lot more. Furthermore the coil gives a good overall representation of most fruits. But struggles with bringing out Meringues, yet custards come out reasonably well starting from 16W. While the RPM 0.4Ω Mesh coil can happily wick 70VG it is advertised as a MTL coil. But the RPM 0.4Ω Mesh coil is far too airy for most MTL vapers.

Chipset and Protection

Both the Smok SCAR-P3 and SCAR-P5 feature the IQ-80 chipset that drives the vape experience. Additionally the IQ-80 on both devices offers the following level of protection.

  • Battery Low (Low Voltage Protection) – Prevents the battery levels dropping to a point of no return.
  • Ohms Too Low – Safety cut out.
  • Ohms Too high – Safety cut out.
  • Atomiser Short – Safety cut out, possibly blown coil.
  • PCBA Too Hot – High temperature protection, protecting both PCB and battery.
  • 8s Timeout – Protects against continued accidental firing.

While there is no reported protection for USB charging. However it would be fair to presume there is some level of protection.

Niggles

While there is little to complain about with either the Smok SCAR-P3 or the SCAR-P5. However the non-swivelling refilling hole gasket, does causes problems with some e-liquid bottles.

Summary

Undoubtedly there is much to like about the Smok SCAR-P3 and SCAR-P5, with their stylish and sleek looks and responsive vapour production. But while the flavours produced are best suited to fruit flavoured e-liquids, there are a few different coils in the RPM and RPM 2 range that may suit your needs better. Due to the robust nature of both devices, with their IP67 water and dust proofing and coupled with its shock resistant build. Both devices are definitely capable of handling every day use and abuse.

However as to what version you may consider purchasing, look at it in the sense of the battery. Moreover if you are new to vaping and don’t have an external battery charger, and like the idea of just charging the device when needed. Then go for the Smok SCAR-P3. But with the Smok SCAR-P5 you are able to swap out the battery when its low. Consequentially this makes the SCAR-P5 perfect for work, or out for the day.
