Introduction

The Smok RPM40, a “Pod Mod” kit that reportedly features a fast response time of 0.001s thanks to the IQ-R chipset. Furthermore with both Nord and RPM coil compatibility, the Smok RPM40 offers a good range of coil choice. However with no airflow control, is the RPM40 a hit or miss ? Let’s delve into this review to find out more.

Below is a quick breakdown of what you may expect to see included with the Smok RPM40 Kit.

Packaging

A particular nice touch with the Smok RPM40 packaging is the way the colour and imagery of the box reflects the contents. Moreover in the case of the supplied Prism Rainbow version, the box is purple reflecting the mod. While the imagery underneath the wording “The Real Pod Mod” depicts the style of the panels that are on the sides of the “Pod Mod”. Additionally it is nice to see on the front of the packaging some key elements of the device shown as icons. Furthermore on the sides you will find contact details for Smok, and the authenticity checker. As expected on the back are the box contents, health warning, and government compliance logos.

Removing the outer sleeving reveals a white box with the Smok logo in silver. Furthermore removing the lid reveals the Smok RPM40, a USB cable, a Nord Pod, a separate RPM pod, all sat neatly within there individual inlays.

Build quality

Without a doubt the Smok RPM40 is a well put together “Pod Mod”, that fills particularly sturdy in the hand. Furthermore despite its mostly square styling, the gently filleted curved edging makes the Smok RPM comfortable to hold.

Despite not being a fan of the received colour version and its panels, the RPM40 remains not only pleasing to the eye but sleek with it. Moreover all the edging and joins are nicely flush and the airflow inlets cleaning cut. However the finish of the Zinc-Alloy and side panels makes the Smok RPM40 a fingerprint magnet.

Furthermore it is a shame that the USB port is on the base, requiring the device to be placed on its back while charging. Additionally the base has a steep contoured design, resulting in less surface area. Thus if not careful the Smok RPM40 is a little more prone to falling over.

Nonetheless the front fascia is nicely laid out, with the responsive fire button in perfect position to be used when thumb firing. Additionally the control buttons are also very responsive, if a little too sensitive. Moreover it is a little too easy to accidentally lock the wattage while adjusting the power output.

Turning on the Smok RPM40 and you instantly notice how slow the device is to turn on. First part of its startup sequence is displaying the Smok logo and firmware version. Second comes the wording “The Real Pod Mod”. Finally it is almost finished when it displays “Pod Attached”. Admittedly it doesn’t take a huge amount of time perhaps 3 seconds, but it is noticeable.

Display

When it comes to the layout of the display, it is particularly well done with each setting and reading a good size. Moreover the colour of the display can be changed to match the Smok RPM40 more closely. For instance purple looks particular good with the Prism Rainbow version. However the screen is surprisingly fuzzy and definitely not crisp. Consequentially I have found myself wondering if my eyes are not focusing.

RPM and Nord Pods

Turning our gaze to the pods included with the Smok RPM40 kit and they are both nicely moulded with clean detailing and edging. Moreover the differences between the two pods are easily noticeable. Firstly the RPM pod is a nice clear pod, while the Nord version is darker. But still retains a perfectly good level of visibility for checking e-liquid levels when not in the “Pod Mod.

Secondly the region into which the coil is placed is markedly different. But a particularly nice touch is the refill gaskets, with RPM and Nord written on each pod. Furthermore the RPM has a red gasket. While the Nord is black.

Sadly however neither pod’s e-liquid levels are visible once inserted into the RPM40, as only the mouthpiece is visible. Furthermore I am not particularly fond of the mouthpiece, but that’s personal preference.

Dimensions

Dimensionally from the base to the top of the mouthpiece, the Smok RPM40 kit stands 99mm tall, has a width of 25mm and a depth of 25mm from the front to the back.

Functionality

While it is fair to say the Smok RPM40 kit has little in the way of end user functionality. However it does allow for a no fuss method of vaping. Moreover this allows users to simply swap out coils, adjust the wattage if required and simply enjoy the vape.

Furthermore turning on the Smok RPM40 is via the usual 5 clicks of the fire button. Additionally three clicks on the fire button locks the “Pod Mod” from firing. While holding the up and down buttons locks the wattage adjustment.

Modes

While there is no real modes other than wattage mode on the Smok RPM40, there is still the ability to change the colour, and reset the puff counter.

VW – Variable Wattage

Wattage mode on the Smok RPM40 is adjustable in one watt increments, with a non-restricted range of 1W – 40W.

Puff Counter Reset

While the puff counter is always visible on the Smok RPM40’s screen. However in order to reset the puff counter, simply press the fire and down button simultaneously.

Battery Use

Featuring a 1500 mAh internal battery, battery economy on the RPM40 is reasonably good. Especially considering that when have I been mostly vaping at 30 – 35W and it has been lasting around 170 puffs. However charging on the Smok RPM40 is via the USB port sat awkwardly in the base, resulting in having to lay the device down. Nonetheless charging is rated at 5V 1A, and while this is not the quickest, it is however better for longterm battery life.

Furthermore battery levels is indicated with a coloured display with both a graphical representation and a textual percentage. Furthermore the Smok RPM40 will pause its charging if you need to have a quick vape, and will continue to charge once the fire button is released.

Refilling

Refilling on either the RPM or Nord pods for the Smok RPM40 is super easy. Moreover with the 5mm refilling holes, even refilling from larger bottles is possible. Furthermore the refilling hole gaskets fit nice and snug without any issues of leaking.

However as previously mentioned you have to keep a close eye on the remaining e-liquid levels by removing the pod from the RPM40 “Pod Mod”, which quickly becomes tedious.

Airflow

While there is no adjustable airflow on the Smok RPM40. Nonetheless the airflow is nice and smooth with very little turbulence. However I have found myself at times placing a finger over half of an airflow inlet, too slightly increase the flavour saturation.

Coil Replacement

Without a doubt replacing the coils on either of the RPM40’s pods is an easy task. Moreover it is a simple as pulling out the old coil, priming the new coil with a few drops of e-liquid down the chimney, and on each of the wicking holes. Then replace the coil back into the pod. However ensure to let it sit for 10-15 minutes in order to become saturated.

RPM 0.4Ω Mesh Coil

Clearly the RPM 0.4Ω Mesh coil is underrated. Moreover at the recommended wattage of 25W the flavour production is somewhat washed out. However bump the power up to 30W – 35W and the overall flavour comes out a lot more. Furthermore the coil gives a good overall representation of most fruits. But struggles with bringing out Meringues. While the RPM 0.4Ω Mesh coil can happily wick 70VG, however the flavour drops a bit when chain vaping.

Nord 0.6Ω Regular Dual Coil

Clearly the RPM 0.4Ω is the winner when it comes to flavour and tonality range between the two coils. While the Nord 0.6Ω Dual coil is a more restricted vape, it is far too airy for MTL. Furthermore the flavour never quite hits the mark wether using high VG or 50PG e-liquids, with the flavour being again washed out. Nonetheless it surprisingly produced a better Meringue flavour than the RPM 0.4Ω coil.

Chipset and Protection

Powered by the IQ-R chipset the Smok RPM40 has a reported firing delay of 0.001s. However as I have no means to verify this, I can at least say it does seem to be a particularly fast and responsive device.

Additionally the IQ-R chipset on the Smok RPM40 offers the following levels of protection.

  • 8s Timeout – Protects against continued accidental firing.
  • Low Voltage Protection – Prevents the battery levels dropping to a point of no return.
  • High Temperature Prompt – Prevents overheating of Smok RPM40 that would cause damage to circuits.
  • Short-Circuit Prompt / Low Resistance Prompt – Safety cut out.

Interestingly there is no reported protection for USB charging. Nonetheless I am sure there must be.

Niggles

Without a doubt the Smok RPM40 has a couple of minor niggles. Firstly has to be the fact that you can not see the e-liquid levels without completely removing the pod. Consequentially the risk of dry hits are increased, costing the Smok RPM40 points in both usability and ease of use . However I suspect that e-liquid levels are easier to be seen with the non-TPD version. Moreover with the TPD bung removed I would imagine you could somewhat see the e-liquid levels through the air inlets.

Secondly has to do with the soft rendering or clarity of the screen. Moreover I am particularly surprised at how soft it is, and again this has cost Smok points in usability. However in truth you don’t look at the screen all that often. But when you do, you really notice it.

Finally the mouthpiece of the pods tend to feel a little awkward in the mouth, and as such I am not a fan. However this part is purely personal preference and may not bother many users.

Summary

The Smok RPM40 “Pod Mod” Kit is not only sleek looking, but also reassuringly sturdy in the hand. However the issue with not being able to see the e-liquid levels especially on the TPD version is an issue. But if you get into the habit of routinely checking the amount of juice within the pod, then the risk of getting a dry hit will greatly be reduced.

Without a doubt leaking coils is often a cause of concern for any stock coil. Yet with the Smok RPM40 there has been no leaks. Furthermore there has even been little or no condensation, which is great to see.

Sadly for many the lack of an enclosed MTL coil may prove to be disappointing. But there are more coils available within the range that may suit a users personal taste better.
